Hi Folks, I’m dry now but what a wild ride late yesterday down to a gig in San Diego. The drive was a psychedelic magical mystery tour of tweaked rain warped images of cars hydroplaning freely between lanes careening out huge swaths of water into each other.  Liquid chaos! I loved it and I’m glad I didn’t get in a crash or see any accidents. I hope it keeps raining to get more water back into SoCal…

The gig last night was a dinner honoring Leonard Patton’s college graduation. I’m thrilled that he now has a Masters degree in music and he’s legal on paper to do what he naturally does. What a gem! It was a great hang and the highlight was a Stevie jam complete with Leonard scatting and a bunch of miniature kids (including his) dancing up a storm.

We had a really fun concert on Christmas eve in Del Mar and I corralled all sorts of photos and put up a photo page here. Maybe you’re in one of the pictures? It was a great day and thanks to all of you that made it out for the music.

Summer on Christmas eve in Del Mar. The view from the stands.

We gathered another collection of positive ink on the Wild Blue recording. Scott Yanow from the L.A. Jazz Scene dug the music and wrote a good review. Click here to check it out. Thanks Scott for helping keep the revolution alive.

For this week I’m thrilled to be reconnecting with pianist Geoffrey Keezer, bassist Hamilton Price and drummer Duncan Moore for a concert at the SOKA University in Orange County. We played our first show at the Athenaeum last July and it was an inspired night of music, in fact, maybe one of our best for the whole year. Here is what music critic Kenneth Herman wrote about the music:

“If you attend enough concerts, sooner or later you experience one of those “a star is born” evenings when you witness a brilliant new group taking shape. Not only did the main protagonists, guitarist Sprague and pianist Keezer, stimulate each others improvised fancies, their mutual enthusiasm was electric, and the filled-to-overflowing Athenaeum audience relished their incandescence.”

We’re gearing it up for Friday and we’d love to have you there too. The drive ain’t bad and from North County it’s less than an hour away. Look below for the details.

Geoffrey Keezer (left to right), Hamilton Price and Peter. Not pictured is our drummer Duncan Moore.

On Thursday night it’ll be me, the nylon guitar and a few floor machines working out the possibilities at the Roxy in Encinitas. Hippy food, hurricane hideaway, in the comfort of heat and immersed in sound — life is good!

Coming up early next week it’ll be me and the gang living in the groove of Stevie Wonder’s music for a concert at Point Loma Nazarene University. The performance space is first rate, the whole band is in the loop including Leonard, Josh Nelson and Rebecca Jade, and the music is coming from our jazz angled ride on Stevie’s magic compositions. Look below for the fine print.

That’s it and hope to see you out there, Peter
