Friends, thanks to all of you that made it to the Dizzy’s Stevie Wonder Tribute show. Infinite fun and creativity! The gifted musos tore it up from reading the semi tricky arrangements and then making them sparkle in realtime. Stevie’s music is rich in harmony and serves as a stellar launching pad for improvisation. We went after exploring the JAZZ in his music and I think it worked out. I know I had fun and the enthusiastic audience was making some positive noises too.

Here is a review from a fellow that took in the concert and was inspired to blog it online. He dug Stevieland! Happiness!

The world spins in waves and right now I’m stoked to be riding a pristine Swami’s righthander filled with media recognition of the most positive variety. The ultra cool San Diego Troubadour has me on their cover this month and I’m talking it up about where my life is at for the moment. I think I said the right things. Click the logo and see if it worked out.

Coming up in June the Museum of Making Music is having what they call an Evening of Note and they’re honoring composer Sammy Nestico and yours truly. Rad! I’ll have to dress up a little and give an acceptance speech. That’ll be tricky. A proper escape hatch is included and that is I’ll also play a few solo tunes on my compadre la guitarra. This works ‘cuz if I start stumbling with the English language I always know I can speak the words of the guitar. If you want to be there for the showdown, click the logo to the right.

Ahead in June I’ll be taking part in the UCSD Jazz Camp. This is a week long camp geared for 14 year olds to adults and the week is filled with private lessons, master classes, involvement in ensembles, evening faculty concerts and open jam sessions. The camp is open to all instruments and the faculty is top notch. Here is a rundown on who will be teaching:

David Borgo, Gilbert Castellanos, Anthony Davis, Mark Dresser, Lisle Ellis, Rick Helzer, Gerry Hemingway, Holly Hofmann, Charles McPherson, Jason Robinson, Peter Sprague, Rob Thorsen, Mike Wofford, Larry Koonse, and others to be announced.

Click the poster to the right to be jettisoned to more details.

Coming up this week is my favorite local north county tour of Ki’s with Leonard and Tripp, the Inn L. with Lisa and Gunnar, the Coyote with the bop crew, and the elegance of La Jolla’s Fresh—solo style. Hope to see you out there.

A few last details— the Cole Porter gig on June 2 has unfortunately been cancelled. Hopefully downwind Lisa and I will twirl this one into play.

Hey, did anyone snap some photos of the Stevie gig? If so, could you send the best ones my way? I’d love it and maybe I’d glue a few up on my website to mark the magic of that evening. I’d give you photo credit too.

adios, Peter
