Friends, it’s a bright morning and Metheny’s Bright Size Life is supplying the soundtrack. Life is good at SpragueLand and the summer is here!
Last week was an absolute whirlwind. I played a solo show at a library near UTC and it had the added effect of a bunch of small kids rustling in their seats. I call it “butt percussion” and it really added a lot, especially on the Brazilian tunes. Hah!
Next up was a concert with vocalist Denise Donatelli and the wizard avatar muso Geoffrey Keezer on piano. Also in the mix was Hamilton Price on bass, Bob Sheppard on woodwinds and Duncan Moore on drums. Killer band and we had a great time playing Keezer’s creative arrangements. Denise has a new CD coming out in August and I'll let you know when it surfaces.
The whirlwind continued with a night of music at The Athenaeum featuring Billy Childs and saxophonist Steve Wilson. They played a few standards, some of Billy’s tunes from his Lyric recording and some of Steve’s compositions. A real magic point was their version of an obscure Laura Nyro tune that incorporated amazing dynamics and an accelerando from hell. Brilliant!

The fellow that’s in charge of organizing the concerts at the Athenaeum, and who also puts on the UCSD Jazz Camp is Dan Atkinson. He’s a true beacon of light for bringing unique and creative music programs to San Diego and also happens to be a kind and gentle soul. He turned 50 last week and had a cool party in PB to celebrate. He invited guitarist Larry Koonse and myself to play music for it. That alone was a treat! What a great time we had mixing it up in a beautiful wooden room, filled with wonderful creative people, looking out the window to the San Diego Bay and eating killer food. Thanks Dan and I know the good life continues on!
Music in a surf shop? Yeah man, that’s what I’m talking about! The gig at the PB Surf Shop last week was a hoot! We had a great turnout and the music travelled to some whacked out places. Hearing Leonard and Kevyn sing together was fantastic and we can’t wait to do it again. We’ll be back, so keep those boards waxed and ready!
To end out last week Leonard and I hightailed it to Bonsall and played a duo house concert hit. From all of the week’s playing our chops were up and we transcended easily to that space where the beginner’s mind takes hold. We ended up playing only nursery rhymes and the theme to Barney looped over and over again. Hah! Beginner's mind or not, it still was a cool concert!
Last night we rehearsed the string group and checked out my new piece. It’s all working and it’s thrilling to hear it live in 3D. We tweaked a few notes but man, its all there, ready to take the stage. On Sunday at 4PM we’re bringing the group to Encinitas for a special house concert at Lauren Golden’s place and there are still some tickets left if you want to go. The admission price includes a wonderful food and drink hang plus sitting in her beautiful garden and checking out the band. Hope you can make it and look below for details.

Tonight I was supposed to be playing in L.A. with vocalist Kate Fuller but the gig got swirled into a Hollywood rescheduling moment. So, instead I was able to reinstate my favorite Roxy solo gig and that’ll be TONIGHT at 7PM. It’d be great to see you there for a ride along nylon string alley….
There you go and thanks for reading. See you on the next loop, Peter
