Hi Friends, I stayed up late last night running through the charts for this weeks “west coast tour” of my String Consort Group. I love the music and it’s a hoot to return back to the tunes after a couple of month’s away. We’re playing 3 gigs pretty much in a row and in this day and age of lug the gear to a string of “one offs”, this may constitute as a world tour. Hah!

We are a classical string quartet — 2 violins, viola and cello sharing the sonic space with the 3 wild men of jazz. It doesn't work on paper but in the real world timeline it takes off!

Our first hit is on Friday at the Tango del Rey. I love this place—high ceilings, wooden floor, free parking for everyone, and a décor that you’ll find nowhere else on earth. Like it or not, its got a great vibe going! The last time our string group played there, the ensemble never sounded better. The acoustics at the Tango were made for a string quartet — ancient wooden instruments mingling with a wooden floor brings supreme joy to these ears.

After the Friday gig we’re playing Saturday evening at Vitello’s in North Hollywood. This too is a fantastic place for live music where the performance is the main attraction, not the crushing ice noise from the margarita blender. I played there a couple weeks back with vocalist Denise Donatelli and I’m stoked to be bringing the strings to L.A..

Our final leg of concerts finds us on Monday playing a show at the Samueli Theatre at the Orange County Performing Arts Center. The event is called “Informally Yours” and we’ll play our music but also open it up for a Q & A moment and talk a little about what we’re doing. Sounds fun and if you’re wishing that we’d have a similar format for the Tango show, no worries, just voice your question or idea and we’ll roll with it. Looseness prevails!

I’m pretty sure the Orange County performance is open only to members. Your best bet is to make the scenic drive down to S.D. for the Friday night Tango del Rey concert. We hope to see you there!

Also up for this week are two solo guitar sessions — tonight at L’Auberge del Mar and Thursday evening at the Roxy. These are freeform sonic visitations to the worlds of Bach, Jobim, Cole Porter, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, SpragueLand and other points of interest. Hop on board!

That’s it for this week and thanks for tuning in.

best,
Peter
