Friends, today’s mini rant coming to you after a busy weekend of gigs. Let’s talk about soundmen and how they rule the world!

You practice your scales for 20 years, you learn the tunes and then you rehearse and hone the music to perfection. And now it’s time to present your art to the people and the last link in the chain is the avatar soundman. He can make you sound great, he can make you sound childish—it’s all right there in front of him on the mixing desk. Does he have the skills? Is he controlling? Will he proclaim, “that’s not possible Mr. Sprague ‘cuz we gotta follow protocol?” Urrrgghhh. So you work with him because your sonic fate is captive within his set of ears. And it doesn’t always work out. Front of house apocalypse! (Cool phrase courtesy of Geoffrey Keezer).

We had one such gig recently but really, I’m amping it up a little to jack the story. We survived, we had fun, but still, it’s a weird world we traverse as musos searching for truth within sound.

And lets not forget some of the great soundmen that we’ve worked with over the years. They understand what it’s like from the player’s point of view and work to make it a good moment. We love those folks!

Wouldn't mind having Sir George Martin be our soundman. He'd get it right!

I have some great gigs coming up this week starting with a Roxy solo guitar hit tomorrow night. Last week at the Roxy my gear was behaving poorly. The next morning I travelled inside the cables and found one bad boy that was spoiling the party. The rig is cool now and we’re ready to stir it up Encinitas style. Hope to see you there!

The Blurring the Edges group brings it together for a concert on Friday night at Grossmont College. Maestro Benedetti organizes things over there and he along with Tripp and myself will present some of our new music. It’ll be good!

Next up is a concert at the Meyer Fine Art Gallery in Little Italy. I’ll be playing with Camarada, a group lead by flutist Beth Ross–Buckley. She’s a wonderful player and also in the band are Fred Benedetti on guitar and Gunnar Biggs on bass. We’re doing a program of all my original music and we’re pulling tunes from some earlier albums all the way to some recent ditties. “Taking it All In”, “Stones”, “India Zach” and “Jimenco” are some of the places that we’ll go. Big fun and you’ve got to hear Beth’s gorgeous sound!

Last up for this week’s run is the Calypso gig on Monday night with my trio. The last time we played there it was a mini rager with a bunch of spirited folks all digging on the music and the food. Consider coming out, it’s a hoot! And if you’re planning on eating dinner, consider ordering food just a little before 7PM, as the happy hour deal is super happy on your wallet too. Yeah!

That’s it folks for now. I’m off to Japan next week to play some shows with Dianne Reeves. We’re playing the whole week in Tokyo at both the Blue Note and the Cotton Club. Can’t wait!

adios, Pedro Brasil
