Greetings good people of jazz, this note is coming to you from my crowded life while picking up the pieces after letting everything go wild for the last 2 weeks. The Billy Childs concert was really a great experience. The music was complete 3 dimensional, thick with details, abundance of color, and a heck of a lot of work to pull off. It came together and was a memorable moment for me. Thanks to all of you that made it out. The picture to the right is of Jimmy Johnson, the bass player in the group. His low-end navigations were incredible…

My longtime musical cohort Kevyn Lettau is coming to town to play the Inn L’Auberge with bassist Gunnar Biggs and myself on Friday. Kevyn and I have known each other since the early Del Mar days of 1975. My family and her family both lived there and Kevyn was the star young vocalist in town jumping into the vocal improvisations of Ella and Jon Hendricks. We joined forces, had a bunch of different groups including the “Dance of the Universe Orchestra” and “BrazilJazz,” played in Japan, toured the U.S. in a U-Haul van and lived to tell all of the stories. Today she lives and plays in L.A. and it’s a special time to have her come to San Diego to join our circus. I’m thrilled! Click on the photo and you can check out her website.

Do you recognize the fellow with me in photo to the right? He’s Ed Gilmore and he’s the coolest! He’s a regular at all of our gigs and always brings a spirited presence to the events. Ed’s an old cat and he’s having a birthday this week so I guess he’s getting older, but you’d never know it. This dude rides a big motorcycle, cracks some clever jokes and helps me lift my big blue guitar amp into my car. My amp is a heavy classic male hernia waiting to happen. Ed don’t care and I love him for that. Hey Ed, we all wish you a happy birthday and may your wonderful dance continue.

If you know Ed and want to come a party that the band and I are playing for him this week, please contact his son E.R. at gilmore_er@yahoo.com

Also this week on Wednesday, Leonard, Lisa, Gunnar, Duncan and I will play the opening act for vocalist Tessa Souter at SD Museum of Art. Can’t wait to hear her too.

On Friday I’ll jump into Anthony Smith’s band for an evening of music at Clay’s in La Jolla, which is the new name for the old Elario’s Restaurant. Can’t wait to play with Anthony and to experience the world from the top floor again…

adios, Peter
