Hi Folks, all good things your way on this chilly Monday. I pulled back into SD yesterday in the afternoon and went immediately to the ocean for a deluxe freeze surf sesh complete with a building south wind. What a perfect compliment to the crazy city that I just left that morning. Living the magnetic East West continuum!

I had a fantastic time in NYC hanging with Diane Reeves and the band at the Rose Room at Lincoln Center. This place is a majestic spot for music—what a setup! Diane was singing up a storm and another joy was having the chance to hang and play with guitarist Romero Lumbambo. He’s the OTHER guitarist with Diane’s group and he’s an amazing player and a wonderful spirit. We traded favorite chords and he’s got some true gems tucked away!

The New York Times gave the concert a great review. Click here to read it.

Here's the entrance to the venue from West 60th Street. In case you're wondering, the biggest Whole Foods I've ever seen is right behind me.

The soundcheck with Reginal Veal on bass, Terryon Gulley on drums and on the right is guitarist Romero Lumbambo.

I had a great hotel room with this view. That's Lincoln Center on the left. The weather was unseasonably warm the first day and then it dive bombed and mixed up with some icy wind. I was cold!

For this week, TONIGHT, it’ll be me along with Gunnar on bass and Duncan on drums playing our trio jazz at the Calypso in Leucadia. It’s a great hang and the best part for me is stretching out with the music in the living room vibe of good folks and friends. Hope to see you there.

The Beatles is our direction for the concert at the Mira Costa College Concert Hall on Thursday night. We’ve done this program 2 times before and it’s a real hit. We take these amazing songs and then filter them through my jazz viewpoint and through this I come up with these arrangements that I think still retain the vibe of the Beatles but definitely traverse to some new sonic vistas. The most radical of them is “I’ve Just Seen a Face” which some may debate has been jazz damaged. (This is where the knowledgeable jazz musician imparts too much jazz harmony to a song and takes it off to a place that has been stripped of the original spirit of the song.) I think in this case it’s borderline but definitely worth the ride. Hah!

Also on the song list are: And I Love Her, Got to Get You Into My Life, Can’t Buy Me Love, Oh Darlin’, Within Without You, Come Together, and actually the list keeps going. The hard part is to wrestle with what to keep off the list—there are so many great songs.

We’ve got a stellar band for the concert and we’re adding Matt Falker’s Mira Costa Vocal Ensemble on 2 of the tunes. Can’t wait to hear that! I hope you can attend and please look below for the details.

Here are a few vid links from past concerts with the group:
