Greetings From a Windy Planet, I’m writing from our office perched up high with the trees rockin’ and rollin’. The Chieftains are supplying the Americana soundtrack and life is good. Love this springtime…
Kevyn Lettau and I are meeting up in Temecula tomorrow eve for a show at this cool spot called The Merc. The setup is ideal and it’s just the right size, has great sound, embraces the full on listening vibe and the gal that hosts the program is herself a great jazz singer and thus, knows how to make it right. Look below for the fine print and if you live near, please join us for some fun…

Also scheduled for this week is a hit at the Roxy in Encinitas with vocalist Leonard Patton and myself. We’ll be there on Saturday evening starting at 7PM and it’ll be great exploring the ins and the outs of making a living as a muso in the times of a collapsing economy. The tip jar will be out and ready….hahh...

And if you’re thinking that the Roxy isn’t the place to go on Saturday evening, please consider this, if I wasn’t gigging on Saturday night I'd be headed to hear the Fly Trio at the Athenaeum Jazz at The Neurosciences Institute. The Fly Trio is saxophonist Mark Turner, bassist Larry Grenadier, and drummer Jeff Ballard completely ripping reality apartjazz at it’s best. When I was a young fellow I did a few gigs in the bay area with Larry and Jeff and they we’re younger than me but totally blew my mind with their music. Here are the details and let me know how you liked it if you do go.
Fly: Jeff Ballard, Larry Grenadier, Mark Turner
Saturday, April 18, 8 PM
at Athenaeum Jazz at The Neurosciences Institute
The Athenaeum’s spring concert series at The Neurosciences Institute (10640 John Jay Hopkins Drive, San Diego 92121) begins on Saturday, April 18, at 8:00 P.M. with the contemporary jazz trio Fly. Fly is a collaborative trio including three of today’s top jazz performers, tenor and soprano saxophonist Mark Turner, bassist Larry Grenadier, and drummer Jeff Ballard.
General admission tickets are $30 per person, $25 for Athenaeum members. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance by calling the Athenaeum at 858-454-5872. $15 student rush tickets will be available at the door with student ID (no advance purchase).
During the past decade Mark Turner has developed into one of the most highly-regarded tenor players in jazz. The New York Times praised him simply as “Possibly jazz’s premier player… his stature in the jazz world keeps growing... a great jazz musician.”
Turner is joined in Fly by two-thirds of the celebrated Brad Mehldau Trio, bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard. Larry Grenadier has twice performed with Brad Mehldau on the Athenaeum’s Neurosciences series and has a stellar jazz career that has included work in the groups of guitarist Pat Metheny, drummer Paul Motian, and saxophonists Joshua Redman and Charles Lloyd.
Drummer Jeff Ballard “wowed” Athenaeum audiences with past performances as part of both the Chick Corea Trio and the Avishai Cohen Quintet. Turner, Grenadier and Ballard combine their formidable forces in Fly, a group that “sounds quite different from any other jazz band… This music straight unsyncopated, pearly notes over a grooving rhythm section is arresting… Fascinating ideas are at work here” (The New York Times).
