Friends, it all came together last week. We celebrated Lisa's new cd and had a great show with a circle of friends and the fine ambience of The Quail. We did a tour of the songs from the recording and the highlight for me was Hendrix's "The Wind Cries Mary." We held the skeptics in suspended animation proving once again that great tunes transcend musical styles and jazz Hendrix lives on. Not sure everyone saw it the way I did but I love hearing Jimi's melody with some fancy harmony underneath shifting the color perception.

Last week also found us dialing up some pretty classic Coyote adventures. Picture this full on Cali summer day and the place is packed. The band is honed and the notes are connecting with the ears of the audience. The whole thing pinnacled with a 15 minute version of "Mais Que Nada" complete with a conga solo, a Leonard and Coral chant, full on dancing by young and old, and a funk style modulation. This was definitely an early summer highlight!
This week I'm Jazz Camping it. Last eve we had a faculty concert with myself along with guitarist Larry Koonse, bassist Rob Thorsen, and drummer Willie Jones III. It was a great night of music and Koonse is such a creative and wonderful force in music. I'm comping chords and absolutely floored with the notes he pulls from his guitar. "Where did he find those? I want them too." He's a hero and you've got to check him out if you haven't already. Click on his photo for some more info on him.

After the concert I led a jam session with the kids and we explored some standards and it culminated with some funk on "Freedom Jazz Dance." The young ones have such beautiful spirit and even though some strange notes emerge, no worries, it'll get worked out and just having the love of music is the big deal. They're living the Big Deal and it's a joy to be in the loop with them.

Later in this week it'll be some great times with Lisa and Gunnar at the Inn L in Del Mar. Hope to see you there

best, Peter
