Hello, it’s been a wonderful long week of new stuff over here. We took in a quick spin over to Palm Springs for some inland heat and much deserved R & R. From there it led into a family gathering to celebrate all that we are thankful for. And the holiday ended with a family tradition of ours— filming a movie involving all of the kids and grownups. The movie themes have always had something to do with The Beatles and I’m not sure why this is but it does give us a launching pad and also gives us the excuse to hang out in the studio. This years movie is called “When I’m 64” and you’ll probably never see it because thankfully it’ll never make the big screen. In the movie we recorded a new version of the tune with everyone singing and then we took it to the streets and made a lip synching version on location in downtown Encinitas. Complete with costumes and a boom box we embraced the theatrics—semi embarrassing but the results were well worth it. Here is a photo of me as John Lennon, father Hall as Ringo, and Tripp on sax as the Walrus…

For this week I’m joining the Southwestern College musos for a concert with both a small ensemble and the big band. The plan is to start off with a quintet and for the second set, turn up the volume and bring in the brass and saxes. The program has a couple of Metheny arrangements along with Chick’s “Spain” and then some straight ahead tunes. It should be some fun. Details are below and I hope to see you there…

For Saturday evening I’ve turned down a bunch of gig prospects just so I can go to the Athenaeum’s Jazz at the Studio to hear a Brazilian hero of mine. The guitarist Guinga is playing a rare show in San Diego and I’ve got to be there. His music is some of my favorite—harmonically wealthy compositions with gorgeous melodies set to the groove of samba. If you are able, try and catch this show. I know tickets are selling well so make sure you call the number below to see if there are still seats available. It’ll be good!

That's what I know so far. I hope to see you out there.
best, Peter
