Friends, it’s early and I’m looking ahead at what’s coming down the pike. The great Charles McPherson is coming to the studio in a couple of hours to lay down some insanity. Until then I’ll update you on some of the gigs that are shaping up.
Next week we’re getting into the “Metheny Religion” of perfect composition mixed with reverb. I love Pat’s music and he’s been one of my main icons in guitar playing, composition and wild long haired delivery. On Saturday October 17 we’ll gather our troupes and celebrate his brilliance with a night of Metheny music done in our own way. There are so many gems to chose from that it is actually hard and almost painful to widdle down the set list to fit into a two set concert. Our song list will include high energy classics; Minuano, Bright Size Life, Have You Heard, Song For Bilbao, Lone Jack and The Fields the Sky to Midwestern inspired ballads; Letter From Home, Travels, In Her Family and Change Of Heart to new millennium anthems; Are You Going With Me and Question and Answer. Half of the 14 pieces that we’ll perform feature lyrics to Pat’s music written by San Diego singer-songwriter Randy Phillips. This is a slightly different approach to Metheny’s music and I call it the “Lyricized Metheny.” Pat usually has a vocalist in his group singing like a horn player without words but for our group vocalist Kevyn Lettau will be the storyteller sharing the wisdom. The concert will be at the Canyon Crest Academy in Carmel Valley. The performance space there is fantastic and has great sound too. Look below for more details and I hope you can make it.

Every summer I look forward to teaching guitar at the UCSD Jazz Camp. It’s an inspired week of sharing ideas and hanging out with young folks in love with music. For pretty much the rest of the year I lay back on teaching and instead leave the time open for studio work and gigs. My good friend Amber Whitlock called up recently and invited me to be part of music workshop and it sounded like too much fun to pass up. The event is called Finding Your Voice, The Singer's Path To Enjoyment and Success in Music and is open to all types of vocalists eager to work on their craft and gather new ideas. Kevyn Lettau and I will be sharing our angle and experience with improvisation and jazz and also how we approach playing in a duo format. There are many other workshops and concerts taking place during the weekend event. Look below for additional information. It should be fun!

The French guitar player, Pierre Bensusan, will present a hands-on guitar workshop on the Cal State San Marcos campus on Monday, October 12 from 6:30-9:30 in ARTS 111 (the ARTS Building on the east side of campus). Pierre is a great guitar player and I heard him last year at the Schullman Auditorium in Carlsbad. He plays mostly in a tuning called DADGAD and comes up with some beautiful music. The three-hour workshop is $50 for General Public. The workshop is free for Palomar, Mira Costa and CSUSM students and faculty (with ID).
Pierre will also be presenting two short concerts (approx 50 minutes each) at CSUSM on Tuesday, October 13, Noon and 1:15 in ARTS 111 as part of the CSUSM Arts and Lectures Series ($15 each for General Public) and a full concert on Tuesday evening at Dizzy's in downtown San Diego. Contact Bill at bradbury@csusm.edu for more details and also Pierre’s website at www.pierrebensusan.com. I wish I could be there but I’ve got a bunch of responsibilities at SpragueLand.
And the last big announcement is that I’ll be at the Roxy tomorrow night for an evening of exploratory guitar, friendship, great food, and that centered feeling of knowing you’re in the right place at the right time. I hope you can join me!
adios, Peter

We're thrilled to play a night of Metheny's music. We have an angle on it called "The Lyricized Metheny" and it will feature Kevyn's vocals on some of Pat's classic tunes. This is also a fantastic venue for listening to music. |
